Custom Stone Sculpture Orders: The Step-by-Step Process Explained
How Custom Orders Actually Work
Commissioning a custom stone sculpture sounds risky — you send a photo and hope for the best. In practice, Quyang workshops have refined a clear process that removes most of the guesswork. Understanding the steps, timelines, and approval points helps you control quality, price, and delivery. Here is how a typical custom order flows from first contact to the crate.
Step 1: Design & Quotation (Days 1–7)
Send your reference — photos, sketches, drawings, or even a small model. Include dimensions (height, width, depth), stone type, finish, and quantity. The workshop evaluates carving difficulty and quotes: simpler reproductions are cheapest, while freehand original designs with complex detail cost more. Expect a clear quotation with unit price, MOQ, and lead time within a few days.
Step 2: 3D Design Approval (Days 7–14)
For original or complex pieces, most serious workshops produce a 3D model of your sculpture so you can review proportions and pose from every angle before any stone is cut. This is the cheapest moment to make changes. Approve the model in writing, and the factory begins sourcing the block and carving.
Step 3: Production & Progress Updates (Weeks 2–8)
Carving time depends on size and detail: a 30–60cm piece can take 1–2 weeks; a 2m statue with intricate detail can take 4–8 weeks. Reputable suppliers send staged progress photos — rough carving, detail work, polishing — so you can flag concerns while the piece is still on the bench, not after it is crated.
Step 4: Pre-Shipment QC (Before Release)
Before the piece is released, a final QC check covers cracks, veining consistency, carving quality, and finish. Request a QC photo/video report of the finished statue, and agree on any touch-up criteria in advance. This is your last chance to inspect — once it is in the crate and on the vessel, changes are expensive.
Step 5: Packing, Shipping & Documentation
Large statues ship in custom wooden crates with internal padding and steel straps; very large pieces may need split design (carved in sections and assembled on site) plus a loading plan. Standard export documents — commercial invoice, packing list, Certificate of Origin — come with the shipment. FOB Tianjin is the common term for Hebei stone, with freight and insurance arranged to your destination port.
Timeline Summary & What to Ask For
Typical end-to-end: 1–2 weeks design/approval, 2–8 weeks production, 1–2 weeks packing and shipping to your port. Always ask for: 3D model approval (for originals), staged progress photos, a QC report, and a written packing specification. A transparent workshop will welcome all four — transparency is the single best predictor of a smooth custom order.
