Granite Monuments & Memorials: Materials, Lettering & Importing
Why Granite for Memorials
Granite is the standard choice for outdoor monuments and headstones for one reason: it lasts. It's one of the hardest, densest natural stones — far more resistant to weathering, acid rain and frost than marble, and it polishes to a deep, glossy finish that holds engraved lettering for generations. Quyang workshops have produced granite memorials and monuments for domestic and export markets for decades.
Granite vs Marble for a Monument
Marble is softer, brighter and easier to carve with fine detail, which suits indoor memorials, statues and sculpture. But outdoors, marble weathers more quickly — carved edges soften and engraved lines can blur over decades. For a permanent outdoor monument or headstone, granite is the safer investment. Many buyers choose granite for the marker itself and marble for accompanying sculpture.
Shapes, Sizes & Styles
Common export styles include the traditional upright headstone with a base, the flat lawn-level marker, the slant marker, the cross or heart shapes, and larger custom monuments — obelisks, statues, benches and family plots. Sizes range from small flat markers around 60cm to grand upright monuments over 2m. Your supplier should quote with full dimensions (height × width × thickness) and whether a concrete foundation or base slab is included.
Lettering & Engraving
Lettering is done by sandblasting through a rubber stencil, then often painted or gilded (gold leaf) and sealed. Specify the exact wording, font style, and whether you want painted, gilded or natural engraved letters. Also decide on decorative elements — carved flowers, crosses, scrolls or custom motifs. Send the text as a digital file (or clear typed copy) so the workshop can proof it before carving; errors in names and dates are heartbreaking to fix.
Granite Colors & Quality Grades
Granite comes in many colors — black (the classic), gray, red, brown and multi-colored. Black granite, especially Indian or Chinese black, is the most requested for its contrast with white or gold lettering. Quality is judged by uniformity of color, absence of cracks and fissures, and a clean polish. A reputable workshop picks sound blocks and matches color across pieces, so the whole monument looks consistent.
Export Packing & Import Considerations
Monuments ship in sturdy wooden crates with internal bracing to protect polished surfaces. Most export is FOB Tianjin, a few hours from Quyang, with full documentation (invoice, packing list, certificate of origin). Check your destination's import duties for HS Chapter 68 stone and any local requirements for memorial goods. A reliable partner handles the paperwork and recommends the right crate for your shipment size.
