Stone Garden Lanterns & Pagodas: The Buyer's Guide
Why Buy a Stone Lantern or Pagoda
Stone lanterns and pagodas are among the most requested garden pieces from Quyang. Originally crafted for Japanese temple gardens, they now anchor Western courtyards, zen gardens, hotel landscaping and restaurant terraces. Quyang's 2,000-year carving tradition means skilled workshops can reproduce classic lantern profiles - or carve to your own design - in marble, granite or sandstone.
The Main Lantern Styles
Buyers usually choose from a few classic profiles:
- Tachi-gata (pedestal) lanterns - the tall, ground-standing style with a stone base, shaft and pagoda-style top; the most popular import.
- Okimono (miniature) lanterns - 20-60cm tabletop pieces for patios, windowsills and e-commerce.
- Yukimi-gata (snow-viewing) lanterns - low, three-legged lanterns with a wide top designed to catch snowfall; popular beside ponds.
- Stone pagodas - stacked, tiered towers (3 to 13 tiers) used as garden focal points and in Buddhist sites.
Specify the style, dimensions and material, and most Quyang workshops can quote quickly - they keep standard models as well as offering full custom carving.
Material: Granite Is the Default for Outdoors
For outdoor lanterns and pagodas, granite is the sensible default: dense, low-porosity and frost-resistant, it survives years of weather without spalling. Marble is whiter and more refined but softer and less weather-tolerant, so it suits indoor or sheltered placements. Sandstone offers an aged, traditional look at a lower cost but weathers faster. Ask which material the quoted model uses - quotes are only comparable when the material matches.
Sizing, Pricing & Lead Time
Pricing scales sharply with height. Small okimono pieces (20-60cm) are affordable and suit sample orders and retail. Standard garden lanterns run about 80cm-1.5m; large pagodas can reach several meters and are quoted as custom engineering pieces. Expect 2-6 weeks for carving depending on size and finish, and confirm whether the price includes the base, the packing crate, and FOB Tianjin terms.
QC Checks Before Shipment
Before release, confirm: no hairline cracks or resin-filled repairs, consistent color and veining across the set, crisp carved detail, and a sturdy wooden crate with internal padding for export. A factory-direct partner should send QC photos or a short video of the finished pieces before they are crated.
Shipping & Import
Lanterns and pagodas ship as palletised crates from Tianjin port, roughly one to two hours from Quyang. Your supplier should provide a commercial invoice, packing list and Certificate of Origin; confirm import duties and any cultural or heritage import rules for your destination before ordering. For help specifying, pricing and QC-ing a lantern or pagoda order, send us your dimensions and reference photos.
