Stone Railings & Balustrades: How to Source, Spec and Import
Why Stone Railings
Stone balustrades are the defining element of classical and Chinese traditional architecture — villa terraces, balconies, staircases, bridges, temple platforms and waterfront promenades. Marble gives a bright, refined look; granite adds density and weatherproofing. Both are carved in Quyang and shipped worldwide, typically FOB Tianjin.
Know the Parts of a Balustrade Run
A balustrade is assembled from repeating units: the base rail (bottom track), balusters (vertical posts — the classic carved vase or gourd shape), and the handrail or top rail. Corner posts, newel posts and end caps finish the run. The simplest way to spec is: total length in meters, height, baluster spacing (center-to-center), and the style of baluster you want.
Common Baluster Styles & Their Look
The traditional Chinese gourd or vase baluster is the most requested for temples and heritage-style projects. European buyers often prefer classical turned balusters, fluted columns, or square-profile balusters with recessed panels. All are feasible — attach a photo of the style you want, or ask the factory for their standard catalog shapes first.
Sizing: Baluster Diameter, Height & Spacing
Typical baluster diameters run 8–14cm at the widest point; railing heights for terraces and balconies usually follow local building codes (commonly 90–110cm). Spacing matters for safety — closer spacing for children's areas or balconies, wider spacing for decorative bridge railings. Give the factory your exact center-to-center spacing so they cut the correct number of balusters.
Materials: Marble vs Granite for Railings
White Shandong marble is the classic bright choice for balustrades and interior staircases. Gray, black and yellow marbles offer different tones. For outdoor, exposed, or high-traffic runs, granite resists staining, frost and abrasion far better and keeps its edges crisp — worth the higher material cost. Confirm whether the surface is polished, honed, or flamed (flamed is safer for outdoor handrails in wet climates).
Packing, Shipping & Installation
Railings ship as numbered pieces in wooden crates with a layout drawing — balusters are hollow-tenoned to lock into the rails with stone adhesive or cement on site. Most runs fit efficiently in a 20ft container; calculate total linear meters per container to optimize freight. Your supplier should supply the numbered packing list and assembly drawing so the installer can match every piece.
